ABOUT

The Ukus are a high-energy Punk Goes Pop cover band from Honolulu, delivering rapid-fire punk rock reinterpretations of popular contemporary island songs. While primarily known for their electrifying covers, they also write and perform original music. Initially performing under the working name "The Hawaiian Punk Rock Band," they were encouraged by a local promoter to choose "anything other than that." Rising to the challenge, they adopted "The Ukus," a playful nod to the pidgin word for head liceā€”and the name stuck. Get it?

The band officially formed in August 2019 when founding member Brian Roberts (a.k.a. B-Rob) brought his long-running island-style Punk Goes Pop concept to life. After years of experimenting with the idea across different bands and collaborations, things finally came together in late 2018 with the involvement of musicians from a local karaoke band. Soon after, drummer Kanta and bassist Amy joined, solidifying the lineup.

Just as The Ukus were gaining momentum with a fresh setlist featuring Amy on vocals, the COVID-19 pandemic brought everything to a halt. Despite the setback, the band remained active, with Kanta recording drums for what would later become their debut release. However, at the height of the pandemic, Kanta relocated, leaving the band in need of a drummer. Enter Brian L (a.k.a. Blinkin), who had assisted with the band's initial launch and was invited back to take over on drums. During lockdown, The Ukus took to Twitch

Kanta eventually returned to Oahu in 2021 and rejoined the band, this time as a guitarist. With restrictions easing, The Ukus released their first single, "Honolulu City Lights," in late 2021 with the help of Nanoweber Records. The following year saw them back on stage and steadily releasing more music. By 2023, Kanta had moved away again.

Today, The Ukus are in full swing, performing regularly at various bars and venues across Honolulu. They continue to expand their catalog of reimagined punk covers while crafting their debut album, recording each track as fast (or as slow) inspiration strikes. With ongoing merch sales and fundraising efforts, they aim to take their electrifying performances beyond Hawaii, bringing their unique punk-rock energy to major cities across the Pacific.
